Introduction
Octave is a distributed data orchestration platform from Sierra Wireless. Octave makes it easy to securely extract, orchestrate, and act on data from your assets at the edge to the cloud.
The Problem
Prior to Octave, an IoT solution typically looked like the architecture shown here:
In this architecture, your edge device requires the development of a proprietary application communicating with some sort of cellular-enabled device, which would in turn, facilitate communications to the cloud. Moreover, you will have to contract with a connectivity provider with good coverage in every country you deploy your solution.
Communication between these devices often involves the use of proprietary protocols such as AT commands. Furthermore, you would also have to implement your own cloud solution including a full communication and management stack that covered the cloud, cellular-enable device, and ultimately the edge device.
The Solution
Octave aims to unify the customer experience across existing Sierra Wireless
products and technologies, and package them as a single unified "out-of-the-box" IoT product which delivers a complete data orchestration solution. This architecture is shown here:
